すばらしいピアニストが登場した！（中山智広）

すばらしいピアニストが登場した。　百々徹（どどとおる）は７２年東京生まれで、９８年にバークリー音楽大学を首席で卒業。　現在NYで活動中だ。　最近はピアノブームで、日本では新人が多数登場したが、時期尚早の人もいたと思う。　リズムがもの足りないのである。　指が速く動いてアップテンポやワルツ、８ビート系が綺麗にできても、遅い４ビートでグルーヴするのは無理、という感じだ。　しかし百々は明らかにそれらとは一線を画す。　ピアノの発音、ノリ、タイム感が全く違う。　断然明確で深く、意識的あり、本格的だ。アップテンポからスローまで完全にピアノがリズムを生み出している。　演奏スタイルはハンコックらの６０年代からキースやブラッドメルドーまで相当研究を重ねて作り上げた感じで、それらを既に引き出しにしてしまったかのようだ。　何より、明快な、ソリッドなリズム、バランスよく配置された左手のハーモニー等が一体となってできたサウンドには強烈なオリジナリティーを感じる。 　曲は２曲のバラード以外はオリジナルのようで、コンテンポラリーなハーモニーとシンコペーションを持った曲から、モンク的なリラクゼーションを感じさせるもの、４ビートから８ビートまで多彩な作品が並ぶ。　作曲の才能も大したものだ。 　半星は次回にとっておくが、明らかに傑作。　ぜひ聴いてほしい。

爽やかな絵心と達者な筆で描かれた絵画的世界　　（青木和冨）

百々は７２年東京生まれで、９８年にバークリー音楽大学を首席で卒業。　今は NY で自己のトリオやケニー・ギャレットらと共演しているということだが、ルーベン・ロジャースらバークリーの仲間と作ったこのトリオアルバムは、ほとんど無名の新人にも関わらず、ピアノファンの期待を決して裏切らない、ちょっと驚きの秀作だ。　百々の魅力は、タッチの豊かさで、ひとつひとつの音が粒立ち、そして、そこに強さ、繊細さの様々の表情が鮮やかに浮かび上がるところにある。　やれキースだやれエヴァンスだなどと言われるだろうが、そのどれでもない自分の世界がすでにあると思う。　自分のノートにある絵画的世界の憧憬がこの音楽の魅力の基本。　爽やかな絵心と達者な筆使い。

A wonderful Pianist appeared !

A wonderful.pianist appeared.Toru Dodo was born in Tokyo in 1972. He graduated as a summa cum laude from the Berklee College of Music 0n 1998. He now lives in NY. It's been piano boom lately. Many new pianists made their debut in Japan, however, I think some of them were too early . Those pianist didn't have a strong rhythm in their playing. Even though they can move their finger fast enough to play up-tempo tune, waltz and 8 beat nicely, they seems unable to swing in a slow tempo. But Dodo is obviously not this type. His touch, groove and his time feeling are totally different. Very deep, conscious and authentic. His piano produces genuine rhythm from up tempo to slow. His style sounds like he studied from 60’s mainstream such as Herbie Hancock to Keith Jarrett and Brad Mehldau . It seems he already let their style go into his pocket . Plus,I sensed strong originality from this clever sound composed of his clear melody, solid rhythm and well-balanced left hand harmony. This album has his 8 original composition besides 2 ballads. His tunes ranges wide from a tune which has a contemporary harmony and syncopated rhythm to a monk-like relaxed tune to 4 beat to 8 beat. His composition ability is also surprising. I saved a full rating for his next album but this CD is simply a masterpiece. I strongly recommend to listen to this album.
